Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his readiness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for peace talks in Istanbul on Thursday, May 15, contingent upon Russia agreeing to a full and unconditional ceasefire starting Monday, May 12. Zelenskyy emphasized that such a ceasefire is essential to create a conducive environment for negotiations.
This development follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for direct negotiations without preconditions. However, Putin has not committed to the ceasefire demanded by Ukraine and its Western allies. Instead, he suggested that a truce could be discussed during the negotiations.
European leaders, including those from the UK, France, Germany, and Poland, have shown support for Ukraine's position, urging Russia to accept the ceasefire and warning of increased sanctions if it refuses. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that meaningful talks are impossible amidst ongoing violence.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, Russia resumed military actions shortly after proposing talks, launching a significant drone assault on Ukrainian cities, which has raised skepticism about its commitment to peace.
The international community remains cautiously optimistic, with ongoing diplomatic maneuvers aimed at facilitating a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
