Trump And XI Hold Constructive Phone call On Trade Relations

On June 5, 2025, President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a 90-minute phone call primarily focused on trade relations. President Trump described the conversation as “very good” and stated that it led to a “very positive conclusion for both countries,” particularly addressing concerns related to the complexity of rare earth products.

During the call, both leaders agreed to have their representatives meet soon for further trade negotiations. The U.S. negotiation team will include Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

This dialogue follows recent accusations from both Washington and Beijing of violating a 90-day trade truce made three weeks prior, which included mutual tariff reductions and plans for continued discussions. Despite these issues, the initial trade pause helped boost consumer and CEO confidence, alongside improving stock market performance.

While the call did not address geopolitical issues such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict or Iran, both leaders extended mutual invitations for future visits, signaling a warming bilateral relationship.
